Discussion: 

Prior to the era of antibiotics, skin infections were typically a major problem. One very common type of skin infection is caused by Staphylococcus aureus. In this Discussion Board, you will research a Staphyloccocus aureus skin infection and design a powerpoint presentation on how you would diagnose this type of infection.

Here are the specific directions for the Module this week:

1). Review the following clinical presentation.

   A 12-year boy was seen by a doctor complaining of a sore left leg which was the result of a bicycle injury. Upon examination, the doctor noted a 4 cm x 3 cm purulent cutaneous lesion on the bottom portion of the left leg. The infected leg area was also swollen and red. The patient reported a moderate degree of pain. The doctor strongly suspects a Staphylococcus aureus infection. You are the medical technologist working in the doctor’s office, and it is your job to confirm the doctor’s diagnosis.

2). In this Discussion Board, please outline the steps you would take to diagnose a Staphylococcus aureus skin infection in a 7-10 slide powerpoint presentation. The attached guideline for the isolation and identification of an unknown organism should be very helpful. Please keep in mind that you must use at least 2 scientific references.
