Part 1- Assignment 2.1

Jim Cummins has had a major impact on the development of second language acquisition theory. Basic to his theory is the concept of BICS, CALPS, and the Cognitive Underlying Proficiency (CUP) theory. Understanding the effect of context on language acquisition and comprehension is essential if the teacher is to plan lessons that are effective for ELLs.

The next assignment asks you to classify your own instructional activities according to Cummins quadrants (THE CHART FOR THE ASSIGNMENT WILL BE EMAILED TO YOU).

Select at least 10 instructional activities you have used and determine how they would be classified under Cummins cognitive continuum.  List the activity, identify the quadrant, and then provide a short explanation as to why you placed it in that quadrant.

Part 2- Assignment 2.2

This part of the assignment you will provide an overview of teaching methods which have been used in the past to teach second language. You may recognize some of them from your own experiences.  As you read about each of the methods, you will be asked to complete an overview chart (THE CHART FOR THE ASSIGNMENT WILL BE EMAILED TO YOU).

Methods for Teaching Second Language to be included on this chart are: Grammar-Translation, Direct Method, The Natural Approach, Total Physical Response (TPR), Language Experience Approach, and Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach (CALLA).

Part 3- Discussion

After reading about Krashen’s hypotheses (https://youtu.be/jobpF4c-1NI), consider how they impact what you do in the classroom. What are the classroom considerations you need to have for ELLs when you consider these five hypotheses?
