After you watch the video , you must thoughtfully answer the following three-part question in your original post:

  • First, consider the characteristics of perception discussed in Chapter 6, including:
    • perception is selective
    • perception is learned
    • perception is culturally determined
    • perception is consistent, and
    • perception is inaccurate.
  • What cultural perceptions of African Americans in the United States have led to the phenomenon of unarmed Black men, Black women, and Black youth facing fear, blame, violence, and death as a result of the perceptions of police and/or civilians? Thoughtfully discuss these perceptions drawing upon at least three of the characteristics of perception above. Cite the textbook. (The Taxonomy of Terms sheet may also be helpful here).
  • Second, consider common values in the United States including, but not limited to equality, change, future orientation, action/work orientation, directness/openness/honesty, and self-pride/self-promotion. Discuss how Black Lives Matter activists draw upon these dominant cultural values. (In other words, how do they utilize these U.S. cultural values to argue their perspectives?) Cite the textbook.
  • Finally, explain and link to an outside source that offers further insight into the beliefs and values of Black Lives Matter activists.

The purpose of this question is to increase critical thinking, intercultural competence, and the ability to engage in perspective-taking related to current events. The purpose is not to debate whether or not you individually agree with the Black Lives Matter movement, but to engage with the topic from the perspective of the activists involved. Please be mindful and respectful in your post since this topic may be difficult and hurtful for some.

You must thoughtfully respond at least twice to your classmates or to me. Your response posts must add to the discussion.
