After you watched the videos assigned in the Viewing – Comprehension section for this lesson, post a thoughtful short essay that answers the following questions:

The films depict the rise of both Chicago and New York, from rural settlements to giant urban centers of capitalism—grand monuments to the Market Revolution described in your textbook. In particular, the films highlight both the innovations and inventors that drove the Market Revolution in these cities, and the high cost of the Market Revolution, especially by poor immigrants and black residents. What were the key inventions and innovations that led to Chicago’s and New York’s rapid growth? What consequences did the turn to industrialization and capitalism have, especially for Chicago’s and New York’s poor black and immigrant populations? Does the film’s discussion of the prejudices immigrants (especially Irish immigrants) faced in both Chicago and New York provide lessons that apply to our own time? If so, what are those lessons?
