Running Head: UNIT I ESSAY 0 Unit I Essay Criminal Justice Organization and Administration Columbia Southern University Management vs. Leadership In a nutshell the difference between management and leadership is that managers manage and leaders lead. Leadership is the quality of providing purpose, direction, and motivation in order to influence people (Surbhi, 2018). Leadership is based on trust and power is gained through influence and inspiring people (Surbhi, 2018). Management is a bit difference in the sense that Leadership is a factor in management (Surbhi, 2018). Management is the skill of running programs, processes, or organizations in the most efficient way possible (Surbhi, 2018). Management is the proficiency in completing missions through and with others through organization and efficient use of time and resources (Surbhi, 2018). Management is based on control and power is gained through managing activities and rule (Surbhi, 2018). The interesting side of leadership and management within criminal justice organization is that the two don’t always coincide (Allen & Sawhney, 2015). Just because an individual is in a management position doesn’t necessarily mean that they possess the skills necessary to be a leader. On the other side of the coin, you don’t have to be in a management position in order to be considered a leader. Law Enforcement officers are often looked at as leaders in a community regardless of their position within the organizations structure (Allen & Sawhney, 2015). Law Enforcement officers have the opportunity to influence people’s lives and encourage change on a regular basis. In my opinion it is a tragedy when a police officer does not take that influence seriously and misses the opportunity to truly make a difference in the community or area that they serve. Managers in a criminal justice organization have a unique role as they are expected to be subject matter experts in all areas of law enforcement although their managerial duties often keep them away from the streets that they serve and they are expected to manage a large group of individual who are likely leaders and have a leaders mindset. It takes a special person to be a leader of leaders. A manager in a criminal justice organization is expected to be both. While that is not always the case, it will be difficult as a manger that does not possess the skills of a leader and a manager. Open vs. Closed Systems A closed system refers to a system that looks to internal events when attempting to explain organizational events or actions (Allen & Sawhney, 2015). Whereas an open system looks to external events to influence change within the organization (Allen & Sawhney, 2015). An open system principle is the assumption that external variables play a significant role in explaining what is happening within the organization (Allen & Sawhney, 2015). There are four characteristics that truly make it what it is. Individual differences, essentially recognizes that people are inherently different and will likely respond differently to similar events (Allen & Sawhney, 2015). What this means is that there is not a one size fits all solution to anything. Motivation, encourages managers to notice that people can be motivated to work towards organizational goals. This means that managers and leaders should be constantly re-design and create systems that rouse interests (Allen & Sawhney, 2015). Mutual interests, recognizes that formal groups cannot take the place of informal groups when it comes to the needing to socialize and encourages managers to allow for the creation of informal groups that officers can participate in (Allen & Sawhney, 2015). Finally, human dignity. Human dignity recognizes the need of an individual to be treated with respect in order for them to enjoy their job to an extent to want to work towards organizational goals (Allen & Sawhney, 2015). I believe that there is a time and a place for everything. Closed systems allow for faster decisions when there isn’t time to sit back and analyze to come up with a solution.
