Instructions for the Business Plan Project Paper: Note: You may access the sample retail and service business plans in the Class Resources area of our course. Students will prepare a business plan for a new or existing business. It is not my intention that you prepare a full-blown business plan that will enable you to seek and obtain funding for your business. Such a plan requires six to nine months of full-time effort to complete. It also requires extensive research from a person who is well-versed in business operations. Since most Business 5000 students enter this course with limited prior business course work, I expect to use the preparation of the business plan to introduce you to many areas of business operations and to equip you with a better overall understanding of what it takes to start a new business or expand an existing business. There are several good web sites that you may want to visit to learn how to prepare a good business plan. Several of these sites are noted in our Class Resources area. Just click on the Class Resources link to visit some of these sites. However, please remember to follow the format and instructions provided in our BUSN 5000 online course. You must first decide the type of business that you intend to explore. Often, many students will prepare a plan for a small business in which they have had an active interest for some time. Accordingly, the student has a genuine interest in the business plan. The list of Top 20 Questions appearing in the Class Resources area came from BizPlanBuilder. It lists the “Top 20 Questions” which will help you develop and enhance your initial thoughts for your proposed business. BizPlanBuilder is one of a number of business planning software programs available for sale. However, you should not use a commercial software business plan template to prepare your business plan for this course. You will waste money and learn very little if you do. I may deduct 30 percent from your business plan grade if you use a canned business plan software/template or any format significantly different from the sample business plan format you have been provided. All the format and content information you need is provided in this class. You can also print a Word format copy of one of two sample business plans available from this course in the Class Resources area. We have prepared a service plan business plan (Sample Business Plan A) and a retail product business plan (Sample Business Plan B) for student use. We have also attached a copy of each of these example business plans to this assignment below. I will provide additional information on your business plan project during Week 3 of the course when I respond to your proposed business plan paragraph(s) that are due at the end of Week 2. Our course discussions will highlight some of the areas that should appear in your business plan. There is also a business plan outline provided in the Class Resources area that allocates points to sections of the plan. Your written plan must be turned in by Sunday night of the eighth week of class (see Weekly Readings link in the Discussions are of the course for the exact due date for the business plan). The written business plan should include the following major topical areas: Executive Summary Company Direction Company Overview Product or Service Strategy Market Analysis Marketing Plan Financial Plan (You will need only two years of financial data for this business plan.) Conclusion Supporting Documents (Financial Statements) Note: Although the sample business plans include three years of financial statements, you will only have to include two years of data for the income statements, cash flow statements, and balance sheets. The business plan should consist of approximately 8- to 10-typewritten, single-spaced pages (written narrative) and six financial statement pages. The project will account for 300 points (30 percent) of your grade. It will require about 15 hours of work (more time if you really want to do great job). I will monitor your progress via your Discussions link postings and WorldClassRoom mail questions I receive throughout the course. You are encouraged to ask questions as you need to. You are also encouraged to use the Internet as appropriate for research purposes and to access the Class Resources area of the course. This assignment is due by 11:59 p.m. CT, Sunday of Week 8. However, if you complete it earlier, please submit it at that time. Please submit your document(s) as an attachment or attachments through the Assignments link of the course. It’s acceptable to submit the financial statements as a separate document (e.g., you use Word for the main part of the business plan and Excel for the financial statements). There will be a 5 percent (15 point) penalty deduction for each day or part of a day that an assignment is submitted late. The instructor may decide not to accept assignments that are not submitted within four days after the assignment due date. Download the academic honesty certification statement (attached with the Week 8 Assignment), include it as a separate file with your business plan assignment and type your name at the bottom where prompted. Remember that you are required to use Word and Excel in this course. Do not try to use Word Perfect, Lotus, or other software applications. Please include your last name as part of the file name, and put your name and the date at the top of your Word-file submission. I will deduct five percent from the assignment if you do not add your name to the paper and add your name to the attached file. 3

Snack and Go Vending Business Plan My vending business will be called “Snack and Go Vending”. “Snack and Go Vending” will be in Melbourne, FL. I will be starting off in Melbourne, FL as this is my current residency. I plan to expand my locations by multiplying in Melbourne first and then expanding to different states like Atlanta, GA and Greenville, SC. My goal is to become a country-wide business. But you must start off somewhere right? I would love for my business to become a place where people can ask for help starting their vending machine business or if they need a vending machine shipped to them. This will be the start of my franchise. Snack and Go Vending will be managed by myself and my husband (Ricky). We both wanted to find a way where we can add more income into our accounts for our future. To benefit our lifestyle, I came up with owning our own vending machine business. We will be able to work on our own time, make our own rules and just do what we want to do. We both currently work at home so this will be a great opportunity for us to careful manage everything. I will oversee inventory and cash flow, while my husband will stock the machines and watch the security cameras for any suspicious activity. On our vending machine, we will install a card reader that will show us everything we need to know like inventory, how much money we have in cash and by card, and it will also give us a feel for which product people mostly prefer and which product people don’t prefer. Our goal is to become a convenience to people in need of a quick snack on the go. Depending on the inventory and how quick customers are purchasing will confirm how many times we would have to stock the machine up. The money we make from the machines will go into a separate savings account that we have set up and will be used to stock up, mechanical issues that we may come across and the rest will be our profit money. By achieving profit, we plan on up charging a few products. We would first walk around and see how our competitors are pricing their food and beverages and we would also see how much the local stores are pricing the products. This will determine if we can upcharge a product or not to make profit. Snack and Go Vending will be a new vending company owned by me and my husband. We are new to the vending world, so we have been researching ways to be successful in this industry by watching YouTube videos of people showing step by step processes. We have even joined Facebook groups so that we can gather ideas and just get an idea of how other people are becoming successful with this industry. We would like to start our vending business at the recreational center so that we can be a convenience to the players who are playing sports there. We noticed that they have all been traveling to the gas station that is near for food and beverage so we thought it would be a better convenience for them to place our vending machine near. This will allow to not travel as far so that they would not miss their breaks. The products that I will be using will be snack products like chips, energizing drinks, water, Gatorade, candy, pastries, peanuts, and other simple snacks. My vending machine will hold a variety of 20-24 different snacks along with 8 different drink selections. Since I will be placing my vending machine near a recreational center, I will have 5-10 healthy selections. I have noticed that healthy vending machines are not as successful as unhealthy vending machines so I figured if I could incorporate healthy and unhealthy snacks and beverages, I would be able to satisfy each consumer’s needs. Since there has been an increase in demand for fast food or fast snacking, I believe that my company will be successful in the future. The location of my vending business will be at a recreational center which will allow kids or adults to have an easier access to food. When kids or even adults are playing sports, they will get hungry or thirsty right after which will draw their attention to my vending machine. I will be a convenience to them which will allow myself to become successful. I will not be requesting for any financial help. Me and my husband will be paying for our LLC and we will also be paying for the vending machines. A typical vending machine costs around $2,000 – $4,000. To start off we have found a used vending machine that costs $2,500. We will also have to pay for a new card reader which is about $400. We have saved up $3,500 with our savings so we will be able to pay for the machines ourselves instead of requesting a loan or financing. We will also use that money to start stocking the vending machine as soon it arrives in our location. Once we have made enough money from the first machine, we will then begin to purchase more machines without using our personal money.

Week 2 Written Assignment: Topic for Business Plan Paper I plan to start a business in the vending machine business. As I have expanded my research on the vending machine business, a lot of people have become very creative with the concept of vending machines. People have created hair, pizza, entertainment, office supplies and even essential vending machines. In China, local companies have even installed crabs into a vending machine for customers wanting live crabs for their enjoyment. Throughout the years, the need for fast food or fast snacking has been in demand. Therefore, I have decided that I would like to open a food and beverage vending machine that will be in Melbourne, FL at a soccer field recreation facility. I will start off with one vending machine as this will be my first experience and expand to multiple machines in multiple areas. By choosing this area as my first location, I will be able to see the foot traffic and what people are preferring over other products. I chose this area because this is a busy area which means more of an opportunity for a lot of kids who are active to draw their attention to my vending machine for a quick snack. What drew my attention to this area is that I noticed all the kids will walk across the street to go to the gas station to get a few snacks. With my vending machine, I think it would be a more of a convenience and allow the consumers to be more willing to get a snack or drink from my vending machine instead of walking across the street to the gas station. My vending business will be called “Snack and Go Vending” and will be starting off as an LLC for the form of the business ownership. I think this is the best route to go in the beginning because an LLC provides a legal and financial protection. An LLC also provides a flexibility ownership and taxation options that will benefit me. I do not have any experience as to how to manage a vending machine so I will be learning as I go and researching as much information as I can. I feel like this business will expand my knowledge on owning a business and will allow myself to expand into a vending corporation.
