Take a minute or two to think of a class in which you excelled and another class in which you did rather poorly. Write 2 columns down labeled “Success” and “Failure”. Under the Success column write down 5 reasons why you excelled in that class; under the failure column, write down 5 reasons why you did poorly in the other class. Go through your list of examples and decide:

1. LOCUS: Who was the locus assigned to? (I.e., who is responsible for the success/failure)
2. CONTROL: Was the reason for the success/failure controllable? (Controllable/uncontrollable)
3. STABILITY: Will those reasons change over time? (Stable/unstable)

(Tip: This assignment is easiest to do when using a table with multiple columns/rows.)

Some notes to help you on this assignment:

Stability (change over time): Effort is unstable; ability is stable

Controllability: Skills is controllable (because it can be learned); aptitude and other’s actions are uncontrollable.

Some external things can be controlled, such as which professor you choose to take for a course, but once you’re in that course, you cannot control his/her teaching style (i.e., others’ actions). A professor’s teaching style may be considered indicative of ability, which is stable over time; hence, it likely won’t change.
