Many risk factors or precursors to adolescent pregnancy include poverty and lack of education. It can also be generational, meaning adolescents born to teen mothers have a higher rate of becoming pregnant as a teen as well. (2018).

In Colorado, an initiative was passed in 2009 that focused on reducing the number of teen pregnancies. Since 2009 the rate of teen pregnancies in Colorado decreased by 54%. In my community, it decreased by 56%. This initiative was then picked up by many other states due to its success rate. This success was due to Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, which funded the “Colorado Family Planning Initiative” which, among other things low income women/teens access to long acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) such as IUD’s and implants. (January 22, 2017) This was brought to community health centers and hospitals throughout Colorado. The most interesting aspect is that when monies for this program were becoming unavailable, an anonymous donor donated 23 million dollars to ensure women were able to access LARCS and other services.
